Should I Get My Child's Baby Teeth Removed?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Dr. Joni
Should I Get My Child's Baby Teeth Removed?Children typically experience the growth of 20 temporary teeth – 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom. Between the ages of 5 and 7 years, these primary teeth are replaced by 32 secondary adult teeth. The process of a child losing their baby teeth continues well into their early teen years.

Primary teeth that are also known as baby teeth are quite critical as they hold space for a child's adult teeth. However, due to some occurrences sometimes you need to get a baby tooth removed.

Here are a few reasons to get your child baby teeth removed:

Infection or Trauma

If your child gets an infection in or around their baby tooth, it may be a good idea to get it removed. In such cases, getting their baby tooth extracted can help save their other teeth, and protect their overall dental health. A large cavity can cause inflammation, discomfort and pain to your child. Moreover, in the case of trauma where your child's baby teeth crack or are broken beyond repair, they should be extracted immediately.

Guidance or Eruption

In some instances, a child's baby teeth must be removed to change the eruption pattern for their adult teeth. If there are any issues with the angulation of the adult teeth that are going to erupt, the removal of some baby teeth can help prevent further problems or damage. Also, if a child's baby tooth hasn't fallen out by the time their adult tooth is coming it, they may need to be removed as well.

Taking your child to a pediatric dentist regularly helps take preventative measures and ensure that your child's teeth develop properly. If you are looking to consult a great pediatric dentist, call us at 406-224-4272 to book an appointment at our clinic Gallatin Valley Pediatric Dentistry!
