Children usually rely on their parents to guide them and provide them with the tools that help them establish good oral hygiene habits to maintain a healthy smile. However, some parents make certain mistakes when it comes to managing their child’s oral health, which can be quite damaging for them.

Here are a few mistakes that parents make with their kids’ smiles.

Letting A Child Brush Alone

A majority of children don’t have the skills to brush their teeth properly, at least until they turn 8. Many kids either don’t take enough time to brush their teeth effectively or skip brushing them altogether. This is where parent supervision comes into play. As a parent, you should try to brush with your child to ensure that each brushing session goes well.

Missing Regular Dental Visits

Many parents don’t take their child to a dentist until a critical dental concern arises. A child’s first dental visit should be when their first tooth appears or on their first birthday. After this, you must take your child to a dentist at least every six months. Doing so helps take preventative measures and ensures that your child’s oral health is excellent.

Not Using Fluoride

Fluoride is an extremely important substance that not only helps remineralize small cavities but also protects teeth from further cavities. As a parent, you need to incorporate the use of fluoride in your child’s oral hygiene routine from a young age. For children that are 3 years and younger, you should use fluoride toothpaste the size of a rice grain. For children between the ages of 3 to 6 years, the amount of fluoride toothpaste should be pea-sized.
